BULLSHlT As an aerospace engineer who was doing his degree (U. Illinois) right when the first of the Cray Super computers were becoming available. In fact the very first CRAY supercomputers at any university were just down the street at what's now known as the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. I can remember the first color aerodynamic analysis showing turbulent airflow over wings at high angles of attack showing the onset of stall. They were posted on the notice board in our department. That stuff was spectacular and it changed aerospace engineering BUT IT DID NOT CHANGE EVERYTHING. The Cray Supercomputers were revolutionary in that they combined both vector and parallel processing,*BUT* they did not change our food supply systems, energy systems, health care systems, education systems or many other systems that daily life includes. Other than SOME aspects of computing, Quantum computers will change NOTHING. I am seriously disappointed that someone like Michio Kaku would be making such stupid claims. But then that's the "futurist" in him and I consider pretty much all futurists as nothing more than overrated techno versions of old fashioned snake oil salesmen.

@felixcosty There's actually a really good video I saw recently that explained how QCs will break everyone's current encryption. Its got to do with the fundamental aspects of how encryption works and how QCs process data. Its a lot like how Alan Turing broke the Enigma Code by eliminating what can't work. BUT they already have a new encryption system that makes solves the problem. On his predictions. As I said its why I hate Futurists. They are always making pronouncements and predictions that NEVER come true. Its probably some form of attention seeking narcissism. I hate it because its just more distractions from things we need to do.

@felixcosty Absolutely and its called "Scientism" and you are 100% right on the techno word salad mentality. I just watched the latest podcast Prof. Mark Blyth (Brown U.) did with George DeMartino. Yes its about Economics but it mentions why Economics as a Science is failing and one part of that is the ignorance of economists to the real world. The guy who started this thread just mentioned to me in another comment the IoT which is a technology that's changed nothing because its a technology that is NOT a solution to any of the worlds problems. Yet to its proponents it will solve all sorts of things but they can't name any. Its the same problem with AI and a similar problem with QC. Yes they can all do things but are they things we really need as in where in the priority list are they?

There are enough hyper-bole merchants who do this idiotic version of the boy who cried wolf. Everything they talks about is a "game changer" and it will "change everything" and "our lives will never be the same" and how this "shocked the world."

@bjre.wa.8681 You are so close to the truth. I am an engineer my actual working life involves technology. I love sci-fi but hate futurists and there is a difference. GOOD sci-fi gets people to think and examine potential futures and what potential future technologies might mean. BIG word is potential. Futurism is uneducated opinion masquerading as if a possibility ALREADY EXISTS or is just around the corner and its going to be brilliant and all of our lives are about to be magically transformed into a utopian society. Futurism is actually an offshoot of the utopian dream philosophy/fantasy. Its quasi religious. Its actually not too far off what Qanon people believe with Donald Trump or what Elon Musk's fanbase believes about their future on Mars. Its just another form of: "If only some magical (or brilliant) person would just walk in and fix everything then life would be beautiful."

@bdegrds Can you and every other clown who thinks that a self aware computer exists or is even close to existing go stick your head in a bucket of ice water and WAKE TF UP. Computers are not capable of thinking and are not even close to thinking. What we have are algorithms that "mimic" human tasks. Like every other from of data crunching they just do it faster than a human can. All that ChatGPT and all the other systems do is just process data with better algorithms. All that quantum computers do is process data more efficiently. There's an awful lot of techno-hype that has one purpose - to suck in investors and customers.
