@scottmanley Actually Scott the expected time from loss of visual to loss of control for untrained pilots in instrument conditions is less than 60 seconds. YOU SHOULD HAVE STRESSED at the start you were flying with an instructor. This is one of those areas where inexperienced pilots who get ahead of themselves get into massive trouble. If any young pilots out there who want to experience WITH AN INSTRUCTOR what spatial disorientation feels like. WITH AN INSTRUCTOR put on the foggles and do a rate 1 full 360 degree turn and then try and fly flat and level by the instruments. That task was given to me by the Flight Examiner for my GFPT. Its one of his standard exercises to see if we HAD LEARNED to follow instructions. I had already done 3.5+ hours of instrument flying by that stage as per requirements but that didn't prepare me for that 360 turn. In my training it had been mainly fly at that heading then fly at a new heading or new altitude. A 360 turn at rate 1 (which is also at 1 G) takes 2 minutes and after about 45 seconds your ears & balance system stabilises to the new condition. When you go to fly level your brain goes mental on you and part of it screams you're NOT in level flight despite the instruments saying you are. It something I believe all pilots should do as an exercise so you can SAFELY EXPERIENCE how your brain can fool you. BEST TO YOU SCOTT FLY SAFE
