HEY SCOTT As a fellow aerospace engineer who got his pilots license later in life here's a couple of pointers my instructors bashed into my skull. I hate that your currently flying and I'm not. I hope these things help as they have helped me. 1) NEVER get chatty when you are within 3NM of the airfield including when you are on the ground getting ready to take off. Until you have the aircraft shut down, powered down and tied down, get your mouth closed unless you need to communicate. *Its called STERILE COCKPIT and along with its twin brother CREW RESOURCE MANAGEMENT its the sort of thing that will save your life one day. Go watch some of the recent Blancolirio incidents reports on mid-air collisions. AWARENESS IN THE PATTERN KEEPS YOU ALIVE. 2) In high performance planes NEVER force your way down onto the runway. It only costs you fuel and time to go around. Most of the higher performance planes like the Mooney M20 I did my retracts and CSU in DON'T take well to being manhandled. For those interested these planes tend to have a much higher wing loading. So their stall characteristics can be very sudden. Go look at the list of Lancair accidents. There's been many Mooney accidents with students as well. When I was in the Mooney my instructor was adamant. "If you are not settled on the glide slope by 300ft AGL on final - THEN GO AROUND." 3) Never risk anything you don't need to especially the weather. If in doubt turn back to where you came from or just land where you can safely land. In any argument mother nature wins. Go and look up the case of Renaud Ecalle. He was arguably the worlds best ever competition aerobatics pilot, winning both the World and European Championships. He tested the weather won day go and look what happened. 4) (my personal favorite) "Treat all aircraft like a they are a smoking hot mistress. Always know your limit and what you can get away with because they don't react well to disrespect and will wreck your life"
