Don't get disheartened, There's an old saying "Space isn't a vacuum, its hard!" I'm an Australian aerospace engineer who did his degree in America. We still haven't even got a program and unless something changes won't ever have one. I actually proposed an air launch system for Australia using a second generation White Knight one. It wasn't rejected, it was ignored by incompetent bureaucrats. I based a lot of my proposal on scaled down version of the American Pegasus launch system. Its been one of the most successful launch systems ever. But like all systems its had its failures. In its first 14 launches there were 3 outright failures and 2 partial failures. Since then it has had 31 successful launches in a row. Launcher 1 is a more complex vehicle than Pegasus. Its liquid fueled not solid fueled. Its also substantially bigger at 30tons. Pegasus XL is 23tons and the standard Pegasus was around 16tons. My proposal for Austral was about 3.5tons. Its a new vehicle, its big and its complex So at this stage of its life you have to expect a few failures. On this launch you look at the things that worked and be happy that some things worked. It seems that the first stage has worked perfectly. Then you work out what went wrong and how to do better next time. Go look at all the other launch systems they all went through this. Space has always been a hard place to do anything.
