  6. Charles, greetings and great video. The automotive industry has treated me well. I was able to support myself turning wrenches living out of two different VWs (1981 caddy mtdi with vnt turbo, and when i was a kid, a 1968 beetle death trap). I bought and ran a VW shop during the economic downturn (2010-2005)and that ultimately led me to closing down "Athens Euroworks" but I agree, mechanic is not a bad career. After that, while traveling all over the USA I have always been able to fall back on wrenching to put food on the table. I lived in fargo ND for a year and got paid to go to the Hunter Alignment training. I got inspired and got several ASE certs and the next job I got in washington state I became the only mechanic (besides oil/tire techs, and ONE guy that really shows promise) AND shop foreman a fairly big independent shop (150-300 cars/month) and within a year I was taking home $60,000+/year for only 40hr/week. If I work overtime its like $40+/hr. I have seen MANY young aspiring technicians come and go, I have trained a guy who later ran his own vw/porsche shop thats still in columbus oh. The problem I see most technicians have starting out, is the inability to clean up or put back every item, and generally not understanding the concept of respecting other peoples things. Do not take it personally, its just that you gotta sound mean if your going to get people to clean the shop properly. I cant wait to move on to the next shop closer to the coast in a bigger city and start all over and see how experienced I can become. During any off time my boss has me building a Sterling kit car with a subaru 2.5 Do not worry Charles, there are some of us out there in the field, still burning with passion to wake up every day and bust knuckles so people can get to work. I find the hardest thing is trying to stay friends with people who, no matter how meanly or often you b!tch at them about keeping the shop clean, and putting things back where they belong.. but they KEEP FREAKING DOING IT Keep up the great videos brother! I live that too many times per week. dont know how I continue to stay motivated, but it keeps happening. I loved the older volkswagens, even through the early 2000s they were still resemblance of cars. Now, I really just hate them more every new year they put out the same stupid 2.0 turbo. how old were you when you stopped being a line tech and went back to the classics? nothing could ever get me out of my 1981 rabbit pickup with its mechanical diesel

  8. a turbo would really lower the noise level, it seems incredibly loud. 130db is like really loud. I always thought the best sounds on a vr6 are NO muffler, but running two resonators. jealous of your R! happy friday charles

  11. I was messing with my daily driven swap and realized I’m only getting about 2/3 throttle. I am excited to fix it. But happy that if I leave it that way I know it’s freaking unbreakable. It has plenty of power to break the speed limit. You can never know the little satisfying joys like this if you don’t make your own shit. Keep it up uncle tony. You the man.

  12. As a professional mechanic. Walmart ‘hart’ tools are NOT TOO SHABBY!! I like to make more money than I spend. My coworker has 100k tools I have $10k tools And with a lil hustle I can make more than him. Except his tools sucked 2 years of pay from his 40 year career. And I’ve sucked out less than 1/2 year of pay. That means I could take a 1.5 year early retirement And still take home as much as him

  15. Had a doctor with an Audi allroad v6 twin turbo that leaked oil. I told him valve covers, cam bore plugs, oil cam chain tensioners half moon seals and oil return lines were leaking. He said i think I’ll just do the valve covers. Which was like around $500 with oil change. 2 months go by and he comes by all high and mighty and says it’s still leaking. I said yup when ya wanna fix the other leaks. Then he started getting heated saying valve covers shoulda fixed it. I showed him my copy of the quotes I gave and pics of the leaks. He gets way more heated. I walk to the back room. Pull $500 from the drawer and hand it to him and say never ever come back or call me again no matter what. He was speechless. But I was much less stressed without that bs. Bro your twin turbo all wheel drive Audi on air ride ain’t my god damn responsibility less you pay for it, every bit of it. He tried to get me to fix the rest but I said too late🫡 I can’t live like that.

  18. I make all my techs understand there maybe someone working at McDonald’s trying to work months on end to afford the repair. And helping people is goal #1 I been there … Valve cover on a 3.6 Pentastar (not fun) We had two of the exact same models receiving same repair and I got handed wrong RO but didn’t check the vin. I won’t do a single thing unless the customer wants if I can help. I want to be their skilled hands and mind only. I will however fix things sometimes without them approving. Happened 3x on friday😂 Once- fixed airbag leak- hose- fixed within diag. Another was a zip tie broke that was holding a vital broken connector- added double zip ties and rec a new connector. And 3rd was mouse damage where cut wires made the radiator fan not work and overheat. As I was explaining to the owner about the mouse damage he said.. ok well what’s it goona take to fix. And I told him I fixed it within the diag fee no extra charge. And he got SO EXCITED and fist bumped me. You can’t always help someone extra ‘on the sly’ But I would accept getting fired over helping a brother man. ❤️😎 Keep ‘em coming lance!!!!

(What I don’t tell you is it only happened once when I let the car sit for 4months. I jumped It and now it’s fine but I don’t say that. Only ask for int no start diag. Surprise. There is nothing to diag. Cars cannot sit for more than 3 weeks Nowadays) How many of those would you get til you refused or quit if they didn’t wanna pay you just to tell them it’s normal ?

  22. My advice is to ask for a raise every three months until you are paying what you would like to get.. If you can’t do this, you don’t deserve a raise cause absolutely no business owner worth his weight will-Give away profit without even being asked. Next advice is to threaten to quit And to actually quit There was shop that I started working at that had never paid over $17/hr for a mechanic. Made everyone everyone do a working interview at $10 hour Eventually was making $30+. And still quit😂 But stayed friends with the owner. Later came back to that shop that ended up having 3 techs all making near $25 and tire guys making over $17 And now I make close to $40 per hr. Quitting literally doubled my wages. Cause I have met many who don’t ask or quit and will work the same job at the same wage for decades.

  24. holley base efi system uses TBI injection, and even houses the computers for the system inside of the "throttle body" so you basically have a computer bolted where the carb was... what could possibly go wrong?

  42.  @Lancemechanics all days are numbered. I have 3 mismatched pistons with used piston rings reusing a timing belt that came off a motor that threw a rod and broke the engine block. And it’s literally been more reliable than countless 2-5yo vehicles. And I got that engine with a valve inside the piston sideways. And I didn’t even hone the block. Doesn’t burn any oil done 23,000 trouble free miles in under one year with 1,500 drive cycles and not a single fault.

They never did ban asbestos in United States. . Congress proposed it and news went hush hush when manufacturers couldn’t get brakes to last and stop squeaking. But consider this there’s so much dust from the road and that’s asbestos. That they now consider mining the dust on the side of the road because it got so much heavy metals. In United States brake manufacturing is wild Wild West Zero regulations Thanks for this video brother man. Ceramic dust is just as bad and will probably stay inside your lungs until you’re buried.   55. your statement is also a little misleading, because as it does need 6-10 wires to run, it also takes a computer, the monitor/ screen, the wires between those, as well as unique tiny micro plugs in the back of those. you could have all those wires hooked up, but that does not mean you arent relying on hundreds of tiny circuits on circuit boards in multiple places

  68. Sounds like a hack body swap from a car with no frame. To a body that needs a frame. I say put 2x of the Acura front wheel drive would be better. One subframe in the front. One in the rear. And you will start off with TWICE the power to weight ratio. And you can adapt them into the Chevy frames. Rather than take an Acura floor pan and try to stick a truck cab on top.

  71. Same reason why my tdi has a mechanical injection pump. Who needs a computer that people pay $1000 to have tuned and have a spare Ecu. I tune with a screwdriver for free. Yeah my idle is a little rougher. But also I have zero electronics that can fail. And 95% of problems on a tdi are electronic by nature.

  104. I had a 12v Vr6- I got from customer who spun a rod bearing at 116k. Also had timing chain failures. I put in a $100 ‘95 obd1 Vr6 block into the Mk4 and it ran like a scalded cat and survived too many owners after me.

  108. I did that with my old Plymouth valiant. Wondered why it won’t start. (Wasn’t in park) proceed to walk around and jump the starter solenoid. Luckily I was quick enough to jump up into the engine bay. (Lucky didn’t get hurt by fan/pulleys.) and crashed into a stack of plywood. Zero damage. Don’t worry. Years later i got my thumb ripped off in a damn serpentine belt.

  110. Same reason why I love driving on snow/wet. You can spin tires like bang shifting tony without breaking parts. My tuned tdi kicks ass from a roll. In the damp you can cruise at 50mph in 4th. And floor it. And spin the tires up and make the speedometer rear 90-100mph. (Reads off the front diff)

But got sucked back in by evil $$$ At the time was making like $14 from a cheap ass boss. When I gave my notice I eventually got offered $70k salary. I made enough to move on and quit anyway. Nothing is worth staring down a black hole of depression. Nothing. And if you can’t learn that. Then everything stops being worth anything when your in that state of mind. Keep it up uncle tony

  113. I miss my 81 Yamaha 400xs. I’m like you in how I take shit to the limit. One of my fondness memories was going 120mph and hitting the spark cut rev limiter at 13,000rpm. Luckily it was a small bike and I was able to regain control. 36 hp and 350lbs is hella fun. Just enough to do a wheelie in first.

  114. I had a car come into the shop with a blown turbo. They hadn’t changed the oil in 20,000 miles. ... Quoted them turbo, lines, and oil change. They actually asked if they could repair the turbo, without changing their oil.
