  1. I was last in Germany in the summer of 1982. We spent some time in West Germany and we took a scary to me train trip through East Germany to get to West Berlin. There was so much security, the East German armed guards checked our passport when we entered the East and again before we entered the West. The outside of the train was checked with guard dogs as well. Our train sped very quickly when passing through East German train stations. We did take a walking trip through East Berlin passing through Checkpoint Charlie. We were required to trade 20 West German Marks for 20 East German Marks. The Berlin in the East still had many buildings damaged from the bombings of WWII. It took us all day to spend our money in restaurants as there wasn’t much to purchase in stores It really was an incredible experience, but I felt better once we were back in the West.
