  1. Precious metals and gem stones are like bank notes and coins merely tokens assigned values by those holding the debts owed to them.

  2.  @garryallison4716  Any material taken out of the money system would be given an arbitrary valuation by the holder and anyone considering a trade for the material. For example following a major nuclear war it would be safe food and clean water that would be more valuable than gold, silver and diamonds.
