  1. Conservatives wanted to close the mines to work towards the break up the power of the trade unions with Thatcher seeking revenge for coal miners strike in the 1970s leading to Labour Government. The UK has 300 years of coal reserves based on 1980s rate of use and were the coal industry to receive the same subsidies as nuclear power than people could have been paid to buy coal and paid to buy electricity from coal fired power stations. In any case Conservatives have abandoned coal miners and coal mining communities and not provided full replacement investment and full funding to replace the loss of coal mines and loss of economic output.
