  1. PFI schemes championed by Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling are the equivalent of taking out a mortgage to buy a single meal. Gordon Brown adored PFI schemes because it meant he could hide public debt and claim to be the Prudent Chancellor. The EU later changed the rules and PFI spending needed to be declared.
