  2. Socialism created the NHS and welfare state, worked to reduce poverty, inequality and protect people from global free market economics racing to extract the most profit from the poorest. The political centre in the UK is now defined as New Labour, Neoliberal Thatcherism. Previous Conservative leaders before Margaret Thatcher would now be considered left wing and to the left of Jeremy Corbyn.
