  1. Step-fathering is a losing proposition from the start. Most mothers will not allow the step-father exercise full fatherly authority (e.g., the right to spank a misbehaving 5-y.o..). Plus, if the child decides to make up an abuse complaint against the step-dad, then the man is screwed.
