Jordan Peterson is basing his statements on his expertise in psychology and sociology, which he acquired by doing research. A purely pragmatic interpretation of raising children (more hands to earn income, someone to take care of the old family members) completely misses the aspects of how human beings are wired and how, as a result of this wiring, certain social orders can be very damaging to individuals.
When Peterson says that even the women who start out being all about "career, strong, and independent", want a child by age 35, unless there is something wrong with them, he is basing it on research results.
Marriage has no rival as an exercise in self-improvement and commitment to learning to really love someone. All those "we just live as partners, who needs that piece of paper" are shirking the price one pays by breaking up a marriage: the doors are always open, walk out when you like, no problem. (Except, of course, if you already have kids.)
The channel host is using a straw man when he gives the example of a junkie neighbor who irresponsibly keeps having more kids. Bad parenthood of some is not an argument against having children.
