  14. It's a combination of selection bias and the fact that all rotary wing aircraft have a rather particular arc of safety incidents until they maximize their reliability. You could see the same arc If you review the safety records of the CH53, or CH47. But for my own experience, I was in love with the osprey, in love with the capabilities it gave us and never had a problem on one, as opposed to flying around Iraq at times in CH46s that were veterans of my father's war. 😬

Broadly the days of tanks and armored vehicles is just as over as the days of fighters aircraft were in the fifties. The uk assumed they were. Reality assumed differently. Since armor was invented, it has done incredibly poorly advancing unsupported by infantry. Russia has used it's good armor badly, suicidally. And it's now left pitting old, less effective vehicles against and increasingly well armed and experienced enemy. The fault isn't with the armor anywhere near as much as it lies with the commanders. Part the second, Ukraine has the entirety of occupied Ukraine to attack into, well before they get into Russia. (Which would be a poor decision of theirs.)

There does not exist a single peer Navy on planet Earth to ours. And we do not have our preferred stocks for 155 and 105 mm ammunition. Neither of which are used by the United States Navy. A naval war with China would result in the concentration of US naval power in the area of the South China Sea. If we took 50% casualties, we would still be three times the size of the Chinese Navy if they took no casualties, with more advanced ships. There is no world with the Navy's structured as they are now that China represents a credible threat to the United States Navy on a peer level. That's not nationalism, patriotism or anything other than math.

  32.  @fh5926  I'm out too, my background was in the Corps as an Engineer. Again, we very much need to know the dimensions of the lanes that are created when we are breaching fields. We absolutely need to know the safe, absolutely safe limits for vehicle entry and troop entry so that we can rapidly exit the danger area. The MICLIC is the discreet and it is thorough So I am going to be able to move my rolling stock and walking grunts through that area ASAP. Without the risk of one detonated anti-tank mine slowing down everybody. No enemy can cover every minefield with pre-registered arty. Even we in the US can't do that along battle lines as long as they are in Ukraine. But a thick and dense enough minefield properly prepared with wire and other obstacles creates a situation where you can move limited resources to address penetrations. I got out completely in 2020. I joined in '03. We have tried and developed multiple ways of dealing with IDs and static fields in the last 20 years, and dropping things like Daisy cutters / MOABs is a tool, it is not the most reliable tool to use to move to the kinds of fields that the Ukrainians are moving through, with the kind of air support/superiority/dominance they do or rather don't have. And dropping an airburst that scoops 98% of the minds out the way and leaves 2% is a very real problem. All I know about comms is that they are up or they are not and a little bit of troubleshooting when it comes to the personal radios I had to deal with. If you were to tell me that XYZ about, commo was possible But not the best idea, I would take you at your word. Take me at mine when I tell you that I absolutely need to know that the land in front of me is as clear as is possible to a discreet and specific left and right lateral limit. I need to know that immediately and I need to know the length of safe distance in front of me to a set of numbers so that I can perform calculations. Me and my engineers and everybody following behind me really need to count on that. Or did. I am on the other side of it, just like you and I hope the best for those that are still doing it as I imagine you do.

  33. Why? It's inherently to the betterment of the military. It helps achieve readiness and mission accomplishment, which are the end of the day the two most important things for any military unit. The only people bitching about wokness are people that think having their feelings catered to is more important than maintaining high readiness levels, and placing mission accomplishment first. Why would we give a shit about the opinions of people who are bitch made? I won't speak for the other branches of service, but here in the Marine Corps we are interested in winning fights, not coddling the fees of a bunch of useless second placers from our last civil war.

  34. China has a significant global military presence. The Soviet Union used to. Both nations, Russia and China are welcome to foot the bill for such things if they can afford it. China can and has no real desire to outside of the missions they already have ongoing overseas, and If it cost a nickel to shit, Russia would have to hold it, in their present situation. So what's happened before, and we weren't terribly troubled by it, and it's likely to happen again but it's not happening right now.

  37. WWII, The NK in Korea (the Chinese, however, not so much), Desert Storm.OIF. (I'm going to award them a successful proxy war when in Afghanistan versus the USSR, however that success would come right back to bite them in the ass.) Which by the way, is incredibly good compared to other major powers. In the same time frame.... Britain: WWII, Falklands (lost or failed in several others) France: Not even WWII. USSR: WWII and they get, in my opinion, a successful proxy war in Vietnam. Russia: Chechnya, Georgia, Ukraine the first time. (It is important to note every single one of the nations they fought bordered them.) China: India. (Lost to Vietnam, fought the US & allies to a draw in Korea.) Tibet really doesn't count due to the enormous difference in technology and size. The keyboard legions love to talk about how few wars the United States won, and neglect to remember how few wars get won authoritatively by anybody, particularly in modern times across large distances. It's almost like war is hard but talking shit on the internet is easy.

Pakistan and India we're only technically nuclearmed nations at the time, and the skirmish between China and the Soviet Union was nothing either country was interested in becoming anything more than just that.   41. The fact that you're not an American nor are you in the military has nothing to do without poorly you demonstrate the basic understanding of human nature. You don't have to be from the United States and you never have to serve to understand the fundamentals of human motivation particularly in large hierarchical organizations and how bad of a choice that particularly small hill to die on was. A general is a leader, not a manager. Not a supervisor. To lead requires a necessity, an absolute necessity to include an emotional component in your leadership. All the generals formidable accomplishments and well thought out plans were partially hamstrung by his inability to realize that what seemed to be a small point of pride that he was in flexible on, was seriously degrading the troops investment in being behind his changes.

The minute any major Nation uses and nuclear weapon, it kicks off an exchange. The minute any minor Nation uses them, it kicks off that Nation being eradicated. This is not complicated they use three letters to go ahead and explain the entire process. And everyone including everyone in China in power understands it just fine.

No. I mean that's a short answer, but the slightly longer one is that the triggering mechanism of nuclear weapons actually is a component of the process to appropriately detonated, and is not a plug and play system. Removing the triggering system, effectively gives you a significant amount of explosive and a significant amount of fusible material, but nothing that can be used to detonate a to fuse B, to create the Earth shattering kaboom. Trying to change the locks on a nuclear weapon is not like doing it on your house or your computer. You end up with all the parts for a nuclear weapon but they don't work together unless you rebuild the bomb from scratch.

The thousands and tens.: when the United States Marine Corps tried to reinvent itself as a four division sized Ranger batt that could swim well with bigger guns (tanks, arty, air.) In the end, both of our services shot themselves in the foot, then stepped on their dicks. The USMC vitally needs combined air,sea, land aspect. It has to remain light and punch above its weight and prize mobility and deployability over even long-term survivability in the field. Those are the fixed requirements of the niche that we accommodate and excel at. And behind the motivated pitbull with a Bowie knife, you need a broadsword, wielded by a Soldier In thick armor with a broad shield. While the United States Army definitely needs units that bridge the 24-hour deployability of the United States Marine Corps to the significant time to Target of an armored division, in the main, the United States Army and Air Force need to be the final word of the "Find Out"phase of the DODs "FAFO" spectrum. Here's to the 5 services and those cosplayers in space force getting back to our interconnected core competencies, shining at them, giving each other shit and still getting the job done better than most.
