@alan-sk7ky RA-5C was 8eight feet longer than F-111B, but wingspan was 17 feet less. A-3 was eight feet longer and wingspan was two feet wider.

MilitaryInsights12 Keep in mind that in the USN, the pilot is not always the aircraft commander. The RIO/WSO can be, depending on rank and mission .

When USN and USAF were forced by DoD to acquire a "common" aircraft for their diverse missions, USN insisted on the capsule, in anticipation of ejections taking place far from the fleet with the crews having to spend protracted times in the water prior to rescue. The downsides were weight, cost, complexity and that although it was a very small amount of time, it did take a full capsule longer to separate from the rest of the aircraft than a regular ejection seat. That's probably why no other operational aircraft used the capsule. In fact, the B-1A, which was also capable of sustained speed well above Mach 1, went from using an escape capsule on the first three B-1As to conventional ejection seats on the fourth and would have continued on into production. Even the Lockheed Blackbirds used conventional ejection seats. The B-58 and B-70 sort of split the difference by using encapsulated ejection seats.
