@Comm0ut 19 nations have either ordered or are already operating the Super Tucano. Sounds pretty stable to me.

@mountainadventures7346 No, it is a upgraded and militarized version of the AT 802, which is in use worldwide.. It is an independent design by Air Tractor, which has been designing and building agricultural aircraft since the '70s and has produced more turbine agricultural aircraft than anyone else in the world. It is no relation to Grumman's agricultural aircraft, out of production for decades, which incidentally was a biplane.

OV-10 would cost a lot more to buy and operate ( twice as many engines for one thing). Also, the OV-10 production line no longer exists. Boeing said they would need a minimum order of 100 aircraft for it to be worth rebuilding the line.

@Kmart4599 Look up the record of VAL-4 with the OV-10

@jamescook7713 The big things for this kind of aircraft are that they can operate almost anywhere, are really easy to maintain and fix and are cheap to buy and operate (make sure when you compare costs you're making sure you're not comparing the basic flyaway cost of one with the lifetime cost of another). These guys are to support Special Operations, not do major Close Air Support work against a large, heavily defended target. And they live with the forces they're supposed to support. An OA-1K that is right there or can be there in five minutes beats the hell in theseparticular situations out of an F-35/-10/ etc that has to come from another country or is plugged into a tanker 150 miles away.

They tried that with the A2D Skyshark. Just didn't work then, and would be fr more expensive today.

Even if it were possible, would cost a lot more to do (and who builds those kind of engines anymore?).
1
All of those except the Super Tucano and Wolverine are long out of production and the tooling to build them no longer exists. Super Tucano is operated around the world by many countries. No one has bought the Wolverine except Thailand.

Air Force got it established decades ago as DoD policy that U. S. Army is forbidden to operate armed fixed wing aircraft; they must leave that to Air Force. .

Take a look at Turbo Mustang III/PA-48 Enforcer from decades ago. This would actually cost much more than what they're doing here.

USAF will Never voluntarily give up a "role and mission" it considers its own.
1
@donswearingen9805 Not exactly. There weer a number of restrictions. First, Army could not develop new airfields or extend runways to accommodate the A-10s. Second, no major upgrades, especially engines. Third, Army could not develop a successor to the A-10, etc. USAF as an institution has never been a fan of the A-10, BTW.

Short Tucano is a license built version in Britain of the EMB-312 Tucano from Brazil. The EMB-314 Super Tucano, also known as the A-29, which is an upgraded attack oriented derivative, won two competitions here, which were then promptly canceled.

Lifetime maintenance, training and spares included in the cost figure
1
@WhiteWolf65 It would also be MUCH more expensive (seriously, it would) ;)

Turboprop. Thee is just no market for large radials today, even if you had access to the special fuel they need and could afford the maintenance. They offer no advantages over turboprops and have lots of disadvantages.
