  1. Wow! We claustrophobics appreciate your showing us the trip without our having to go on it ourselves. The different surfaces were truly amazing. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (between Washington, D.C., and Cumberland, Maryland) also has tunnels but, if I'm not mistaken, they were wide enough to allow the mules to continue their job. Surely different conditions require different solutions but I cannot imagine how the men could have "legged" a boat all that distance.
