  4. DNA testing has opened a whole new world we never imagined... When I was in college 40+ years ago, it wasn't uncommon for a guy to donate at sperm banks. It meant easy money. It meant a lot of money if one did so frequently and at multiple banks. I can't remember how many times I donated, but recently discovered from one donation 9 children were born. I can't imagine how many biological children and grandchildren I must have out there. That was a consequence I never thought I'd ever know about.

  5. The way this played out is strange to me... I was abused by my father (mental and physical, not sexual) and most people knew it (relatives and friends of my parents) and even though I never came close to killing him, I knew I would if I ever saw him hurt my brother or mother. This video seemed strange to me because I would not have lied about it. I often played it out in my head, what I'd do if he hurt either of them, and every time I called the police and told them what I did. Perhaps I knew there was no point to deny it because my mother or brother would obviously know. But also, I'm sure I didn't care what happened to me. I spent most of my childhood thinking of suicide. The only reason I didn't was my grandmother made me promise I wouldn't. This was back in the 1960's, I was preteen, and people didn't report abuse as they would nowadays. In my teens, I just plotted how to get away from him (which I did at 16). I don't condone what Nick did. I don't sympathize in any way. Maybe he did just crack but he's smart and knew there were alternative choices. Based on this video, it seems clear to me it was premeditated. That he turned on his mother and brothers, well that's just evil. I'd like to see an interview with him now. I'd like to see how he's changed.

As a college student in the 1980's, I frequently made donations with many different clinics in various states. It was a good source of income. I didn't want to raise a family so being able to help a couple have a baby seemed benevolent. DNA profiling and personal computers weren't a thing back then. Records were on paper. There was very little oversight. Sperm could be kept a long time. It never occurred to me that in the future we'd be able to do genetic family searches. I did a DNA test to discover any health issues. The ancestry part was of no concern... I knew my relatives. When I received the results, it was a shock to see biological children and grandchildren. A lot of them. I then used two other search companies which revealed more children. My concerns were primarily to stay anonymous, and that people weren't going to marry a sibling. There wasn't much I could do about the latter.

  289. After living in northern Finland a few years, I became accustomed to using the sauna at least every other day. A Finnish sauna is much hotter than, in the USA for example, so a shower afterwards is not sufficient to cool the body done, so one doesn't keep sweating. So we did cold plunge into icy water, and if a lake wasn't near, we'd roll around in the snow. However we didn't feel cold. Our bodies were hot and it took awhile to cool down to the point we'd start to feel chilly. Ever since then I have always had a sauna in my home. I don't feel clean otherwise. Then there are all the other benefits. I live in the Canadian Rockies now so a way we cool down is a hole (in the ice) in our pond or rolling around in and playing in the snow for about half an hour. Edit: I forgot to mention Finns aren't very modest so expect everyone to be completely naked and not segregated by gender.
