There is a variation of this trope is the generational mothership. People lived on a huge ship that is going to another star hoping that there is a habitable planet there. The usual horrors are there but you can put a twist is that they are running away from something, another horror more personal than the void of space, and there is a feeling that that thing is out there still looking for you.
