It is intellectually dishonest of Sullivan to say that it is the assumption that opening trade will benefit everyone when it was clear from the beginning the only people who will benefit from globalization are the ones who can move capital freely and own the technologies and means of production. The common people who barely have much capital and only have their labor to sell are only going to benefit from this liberalisation of the world economy marginally in cheaper consumer products. They won't be able to accumulate capital themselves, at least not on the scale as the capitalists. The capitalists, especially the neoliberals know this instinctively and they created this myth that it will benefit everyone through propaganda and dishonest intellectualism. They know they can gut everyone. The system is working as intended. It was never intended to benefit the common people, the working class.

It's not true that the US is a free market economy. They subsidise the oil, coal and big ag, and big pharma all the time. Not to mention preserving the surplus recycling machine that is Wall St. with the unconditional support and bailouts. The US is a "socialized" country in that the US government intervenes greatly in the market. It is not socialist or even democratic because it always intervenes on the behalf of the capitalists to their benefit. A country that keeps enacting anti social, anti public policies cannot be called a democracy, even if the people can vote for their leaders. Because the system ultimately is not in control by the people, for the people and their interests.

Whether or not the century of humiliation ended in 1911 or 1949, the west today is determined that it doesn't end ever. Keeping China down so the west is up is now the imperative priority of the powers that control the west.

The fact that the US is regretting the tech transfer and is trying everything in its power to mischaracterize the tech transfer as forced or stolen tells you that they know that technology is what makes a country strong and prosperous. They never intended for any non western, heck non US to ever be on par or more technologically advanced than the US. They never want any other country to be as prosperous as the US. The inherent maliciousness of their thinking is evident.

They thought that China will become like them, a neoliberal capitalist hellscape. That's why the US allowed China to join WTO. They thought that the capitalism forces will corrupt the top echelons of the CPC and turn Beijing into another Washington where corporate power reign supreme. Ohh boy were they wrong in that score. Now they realized the CPC is very much in power and very much still working towards Deng's vision of a technocratic socialistic country, they are trying to backpeddle and sabotaging China in every way possible. But China is now too militarily and culturally strong, too prosperous, too industrialized, too technologically advanced and too integrated to the entire world to be deterred from their quest. China is the only real, tangible hope that bring socialism/communism to the center stage, and thus a more equitable and just world. They didn't have to export their model, they just have to give the developing countries breathing room from the violent captialists who have been aggressively putting down any nascent socialist movements since end of WWII, to develop their own socialist models. And the neoliberal market fundamentalists in the west will get their just desserts. In time. Never forget who the real enemies are. The people at the top who make all the decisions in the western capitalist hegemony and elsewhere are the real enemies. No war but class war
