  1. I think the pre-heating idea comes from the internal logic that the higher the temperature of the combustion, the more complete the combustion and thus lumen yield. The power output in ICE is based on carnot cycle where the higher the temperature difference between the hot reservoir (combusting part) and the cold reservoir (the air intake) the better yield of the kinetic energy you can harvest from the engine. I'm not exactly sure how it can really applies to lamp fuel efficiency though.
