China has a manufacturing base 5X larger than USA's. China has a shipbuilding capability 200X larger than USA's. Their technological progress is quickly narrowing the gap with US military, and in some cases edging it out.

Japan & SKorea: Ships Taiwan: Chips

@justme6275 - except ships aren't high-tech value-added products like microchips are. The challenge of automating such large-scale production is very steep. Such automated processes would amount to reinventing the entire industry, in which case you may as well not bring over the old processes from Japan or SKorea in the first place.

You can add ignorance and complacency in there

But Musk and SpaceX aren't resting on their laurels -- they're a moving target, and continue to push the boundaries. By the time China catches up in constellations, SpaceX will have moved well beyond that. Musk has promised Trump that if elected, there will be Starship flight to Mars before the end of his term.

@thierrycs1165 - US aint gonna starve before China - far more arable land. We can see which country imports more foodstuffs.
1
@laviklee what's the difference between those 2?
1
@ytfanlingeric - guns are guns - I don't see what hairsplitting distinction you're making between manufacturing them and using them. That's nowt what Guns-vs-Butter is about.
1
@tat3179 - cost to plant? American agriculture is highly industrialized and automated. Its output is far higher than China's.
