  1.  @dugroz well History Guy does pretty good research sooooo… yah. Smoked. I bet they did steam a bit in hot sun though, too!😅 But yah they smoked meat back then to preserve it and make it last longer. Canning for preservation on a mass production scale was only barely invented at that time, if I am remembering correctly.
