  1. the Thompson dude opposing the Russian linguist’s discoveries out-of-hand is also unfortunately because in 1952 that’s like the hottest part of the “cold war”. Maybe it was slightly unconscious but definitely all Americans were “culturally” expected to oppose anything Russian and communist, even if it was a legitimate historical or scientific discovery… because of the political overtones of the cold war that spilled over into and affected things it should not affect, such as legitimate historical linguistical decoding discoveries like the mean looking Russian linguist discovered.
