also recommend to look up videos on the okracoke accent/dialect in north carolina. it has almost died out. but videos exist from the 1990's and some old folks still speak it. a super summary of the history is that those people are descendants of some of the pirates and fishermen who settled the area in the 1800's after the end of the "pirate era". the okracoke islands and outerbanks were so isolated from the much of the rest of the United States for such a long time, that the accent and dialect was preserved. it really surprised me when i watched it because it sounded an English accent that had survived since colonial times
