sometimes people do petty stuff to other people for completely and apparently completely reasonless reasons. I mean i see your point. But surely you also know that humans are known to do petty stuff to other people for seemingly no reason at all. Usually because the person doing it to that person is just plain evil and bad. As with Louis the XIV, an absolute monarch. Great in his own right I suppose, but also just plain evil and bad.

heyeee i “quick googled” the etymologies of ‘Eustache’ and ‘Dauger’! And guess what guess what?!?! They come from Eustace and further back the Greek Eustachys meaning, ‘good grapes’ or ‘bountiful harvest’; while ‘dauger’ derives from an old German word adalgarius meaning ‘noble spear’!! So, to summarize, the prisoner in the iron mask has been confirmed as Eustache Dauger, which may be a pseudonym. A pseudonym with a not so hidden meaning of “Good grapes of the Noble Spear”. So yah based on that solely and only, I choose to believe the pseudonym theory and it was still the king’s twin!!!😂

citing the contemporaneous sources was awesome. But also, I am so additionally curious of possible secondary sources? Because, it appears between the year 1687 cited in the contemporaneous source, between that time and the time of Alexandre Dumas’s novels and writings, say about, 150 or 200 years… between that time it would appear that some sort of famous legend grew up around it. A legend large enough for it to be famous enough for Dumas to immortalize it in his novels. So then, I am secondarily super curious, like, how did Dumas know about it? What were his sources? Or could it indeed have been just a “folk legend” that somehow got passed down orally for 150 years?

i like the twin theory the best of course because it is the most scandalous😂. So in lieue of primary sources smoking gun evidence i shall still choose to believe the twin theory because i am most entertained by it. Be it known and declared however that, I am able, with my critical thinking skills, to remember that it is only historical theories based upon scant or zero evidence or, circumstantial evidence even, as it were😃

yes jokes fun fun fun. and also, in real reality, we know for a fact that Louis XIV was a hateful absolute monarch. An absolute dictator if you will. So, yes, in fact, Dartagnan, the real one, was in fact a real hired goon killing others for the hateful absolute monarch. That being acknowledged, we, being cultured people, we of course are able to separate the real part from the fictional part of Dumas’s novels and just enjoy the story anyways! 😅 Because I do so love the Musketeer stories!!
