There were already opium dens at that time, in the west and England, plus also remember tobacco/nicotine is a technically a drug and an addiction and had already been around for almost 200 years in England, by that time. And plus also, whoda thunk it, also the historical Great Awakening evangelical movements where many swore off their former vices and turned their hearts to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
