Professor Mercogliano could you also do full length history podcasts? Shipping oriented? I mean I obviously realized you are a professor but I literally just now put two and two together realizing you are an expert in shipping history based on some things you said in this episode. And that is awesome and I so love history podcasts. Or maybe you already have episodes on such? I shall search the archive. Starting another side project podcast on top of keeping us informed and teaching college kids might be a bit much and I would understand but also, but also, what I wouldn’t give to listen to your knowledge on shipping history and the intersections of military and commercial just about all day long! In a similar way to how I can listen to Dan Carlin of Hardcore History podcast alllllll day long and totally enthralled all throughout!

Fantastic intro! I sure do love alliteration phrases. I have been finding myself trying to say them more and more often these days as I notice more and more what may appear to be the grammar and writings skills of many apparently not existing in some comments sections of the interwebs. So I entertain myself with nonsense alliteration phrases of multisyllabic words because I used to read the dictionary when a child, don’t anymore, but I remembered some of them. 😅 oof yah I am “that guy”. But of course the opening alliteration made excellent sense in my mind.🎉

as a Texan I did not know Port of Laredo land port was the biggest. I meannn it’s not necessarily surprising… but it is also incedible!

oh dude nice job on the American affectation on the Oakland one! Not too shabby! you got those hard “r’s” real good!

he mentioned that it is the “8th lowest level” ever, on the Mississippi in his video. Being a history enthusiast, I would be very curious to learn what years the 1st and or 2nd lowest levels ever recorded were, and how it affected the rest of the economy, comparing against and considering how we here in 2022 are in these times of economic recession and hyper inflation here in America.

oh dang i just realized what my family’s yule log tradition is. my aunt makes me a “pumpkin roll” each year. is a delicious pastry item of pumpkin bread rolled up with a layer sweet cream cheese. It looks like a log!!! very similar to your yule log cake!

my dad did have bad issues with his 2018. Cam phasers went out at 45k but he was still under warranty. Sadly, cam phasers went out AGAIN at 80k or 90k miles. Out of warranty. So he switched to a 2021. Safe to say I will never buy a 2018 unless I could find an aftermarket cam phaser bullet-proofing solution.

‘04-‘06 with the 4.6 v8 are still ok. but yah of course the 5.4 3v was terrible.

aw dang it professor. You were saying Beryl correctly in your first video the other day and now you’re not!😂 To be fair, few are saying it correctly. It is in fact Beryl like, Berl, like Burl. NOT like barrel. It was a popular name in the early 1900s and it has fallen out of popularity so people do not know how to say it any more and they do not know that there are multiple spellings for the same pronunciation. Beryl = Burl like Burl Ives the old timey singer. It’s NOT barrel and all these blasted weather people saying it wrong REALLY grinds my gears!!!!😅

i have a friend from Peru and he was very proud to introduce me to Chicha. Purple chicha! From purple corn. Except it was not alcoholic and was very delicious ro drink. Like sweet purple cola, sorta kinda. Or sweet purple corn juice😅. Anyways it was really good and sooner or later I am that I will try the alcohol version of it.

some of the characters in some of the stone work looked almost “mayan”, if indeed the character or picture I’m thinking of does repeat itself over and over in that staff god sun gate statue. I wonder if “official” archaeos have considered this? I am by no means implying any sort of relationship. I am simply observing that it looks similar. Besides I’m just a regular joe with a state college bachelor degree anyways lol. I think I’m saying that because I only just recently learned that the Mayan script had been partially decoded with work ongoing. As seen in the late Dr. Coe’s lectures as he was one of the ones who helped decode it.

i’m in Houston and I only just now heard about this through Professor Sal. Worked all day yesterday. Obviously quite a crazy week for the nation with… well you know… fight! fight! fight! So I think maybe I was paying attention to all the other things also. But anyway I worked yesterday and I had not watched local news yet. So thanks Professor!
3
yes. that is the exact reason i too watch the channel. I believe that Professor Mercagliano also intends it to be such a channel.

alright well all of this fascinating stuff reminds me of the rumors and/or legends i have heard or have nominally read about regarding european style megaliths and such. saw a picture of one under the water one time but was it real or hoaxed who knows? i didn’t research further but thought it was fun to think about. Not to mention some of the mounds that feature equinox alignments which maybe you have talked about in other videos. I hope the megaliths are real and I want them to be haha. But really I haven’t the slightest idea. But again fantastic video and I learned some more stuff!
2
hey that was really interesting! thanks! However, I may have to watch it a couple of more times because alas, I am American and I had a very hard time understanding your accent.😅 May I say, that is NOT a criticism of you! But if anything of me, since I’ve never interacted with Scottish people, but have maybe only watched a video or two about the Scots accents. Wellll anyway, I enjoy these type of history videos nonetheless. So yah I guess I’ll watch again and catch more words next. Oh side note like another time, I was hanging out with my buddy. His wife is from Liverpool. Her cousin had came state side to visit. And I could NOT understand a single word he said his Liverpool accent was so thick!😂 But he was totally cool about it. Plus also he was a professional chef and he cooked for us and it was awesome. Interestingly, he could perfectly understand our Texas American accents.

oh also, I intentionally turned off subtitles because I wanted to challenge myself to understand by listening

i just saw a fascinating short vid yesterday on a recently discovered archaeology site in Kansas in what would maybe be like the Plains Village period. They call it Etzanoa and it’s in Kansas somewhere, and apparently was maybe like, a huge huge village. But I say village because they weren’t calling it a city because it didn’t have any mounds like Cahokia. It apparently was just like, village after village after village all along together pretty much connected. Along a river called Walnut River and, they scientist estimation of population is something like 200,000! pretty crazy!

if a theoretical hand was blown up or some imaginary fingers were blown off, could you put a thumb in the bleeding thumbhole?
2
ahhh fremente… ok weird i am having this weird childhood memory of seeing bread pudding being labeled as fremente somewhere along the way but i was never told why😅
2
ohhhh interesting! I wonder if thus is where Johnny Cash was stationed when he interecepted the message that Stalin was dead? Mike Rowe had a great episode on his podcast about how Johnny Cash had been that guy when he was in the air force before he started performing country music.
2
ummmmmm why does the unhappy yule log servant look like hitler?😂 that was hilarious. i mean i could care less either way as it is just your model for demonstration. But it wassss funny to me when i noticed. and it appears i am the only one in comments who caught the joke unless i just made it up.

ouchita pronunciation = “wash it all” except no L sounds at the end. lolz. “wash it taww”. I haven’t the faintest idea why. maybe an old indian word carried over to present times just like the Mississippi River and so many other words

frikkin love me some papaya! Both the flavor and the health benefits! It is nature’s best God-given laxative in my opinion!!! I had some…. err…. uhhh… constipation related health issues a few years ago. Doctor literally prescribed me to eat more papaya and avocados. Nature’s best natural laxatives! Food IS medicine!😂😅 Also fun to shoot.

yes!

13:49; father Christmas/Saint Nicholas… well i also learned one year that Saint Nicholas was like a real German saint or something and he took care of poor people in the name of Jesus Christ our Savior and then over the centuries it morphed into the father Christmas/Santa Claus thing. Saint Nicholas… Santa Nicklaus in the German… Klaus…. Santa Claus

also merry christmas!

never been on a ship besides a museum ship but i’ma go ahead and say that I very very do not suspect that America’s supposed military superiority is going to play out well in a China conflict if they don’t even have anybody to help supply and fuel and salvage things. Seems like a paper tiger situation. And as a “neocon” turned more libertarian over the years ummm that seems super problematic. Like I’m not saying anything in support of Imperialism, and I am also not hoping to be defeated in a potential China seaborne conflict that it seems like a lot of “saber rattling” has been happening about, lately.

without foreign aid, sir, Zelensky’s caput! he did NOT better putin. it is well known that Ukraine is JUST as corrupt politically as russia. and had barely any military. i am the libertarian against any foreign aid to ukraine when meanwhile, our own fellow citizens suffer in our owbb respective countries like USA and UK. gimme a break with this “zelensky bettered putin” ridiculousness
2
fascinating. I am very glad your video came up on my “recommendeds” from the “algorithm”, which I think it did because I watch a lot of different economics and investing videos even though I am a “low net worth” individual and really just watch to learn new stuff. This is something that makes a whole lot of sense but that I I never thought about! Thank you!
2
always fascinating to watch and learn. And I am typing from a totally ignorant stance. But did go to Chichen Itza when I was 14 and I remember it being awesome.

9k pounds dry weight…. 11k pounds with 4 bruhs and their hunting duffels and guns and stuff going a bro-man-hunting trip😂😅😂

i looked up the history of wassail a few years ago and it was huge news to me that it is actually an alcholic drink😂 my mom makes it every year but she’s massive teetotaller and so the wassail version she makes is like a warm delicious sort of like apple cinnamon tea sort of thing. Still very warming and delicious! but then the history thing is like it had something called mulled wine in it.

wow for some reason I thought this channel was older than 4 or 5 years. I do not know why I thought that. I really like this channel. I enjoy the modern knight guy and his knowledge and narrations. He is genuine and sincere and tells you when he does not know something or when the historical record does not mention something; as opposed to some of the history narrators at other channels that try to fluff up and gloss about crap or make it up when the actual historical primary sources never recorded anything. Yes, anyways, I came back to this wondering about when this channel got started. Love it!

7:51; speaking of preparing really large birds like swan, lol, here in Texas I just went on my first Sandhill Crane hunt the week before Christmas and it was sooo much fun! i hear wingshooting has a good tradition in UK also. Anyways sandhills are huge! you get 16oz breast filets out them, and cook them like steak. To American hunters, they are nicknamed, “ribeye of the sky”. And now I can officially confirm it is true!
2
as others have said, this is also the first video i saw in my “recommendeds” feed of yours. Just excellent and interesting. Obviously, the “algorithm” plays off of other things a person has watched. And i have watched various alternative history channels such as geo cosmic rex and ancient architects and graham hancock and others and such. While theorization they may be, i personally do not view them as “alternative” but as simply offering theories that should be investigated and tested out in the archaeological ans anthropological sciences.

the Thompson dude opposing the Russian linguist’s discoveries out-of-hand is also unfortunately because in 1952 that’s like the hottest part of the “cold war”. Maybe it was slightly unconscious but definitely all Americans were “culturally” expected to oppose anything Russian and communist, even if it was a legitimate historical or scientific discovery… because of the political overtones of the cold war that spilled over into and affected things it should not affect, such as legitimate historical linguistical decoding discoveries like the mean looking Russian linguist discovered.

18:00 sorry guys i am brand new to this Mayan history and I really do not understand why that king being nicknamed the ballplayer was considered a burn to him? Or am I missing a modern day joke applied to the historical presentation? if so, my bad.
1
@CommodityCulture right on, and obviously, I was trying to be silly on purpose at the end of my comment

16:32; i am totally uneducated on handling snakes… so I am very curious why he picked it up by the tale? Freaked me out man!😅 I always think of the pinch them by the head method
1
is called the gate of tears because it has always had pirates who rape and pillage?
1
yes the national hurricane director guy was also saying it wrong. They all were. But again as I mentioned, it is slightly understandable since no one’s named their kids that since the 1920s. Yet again it was always pronounced like Burl or Berl and some folks spelled their names in various and sundry ways with the same pronunciation. That said, according to a strict interpretation of grammatical pronunciation rules of American English grammar, if you did not know that history, you would understandably read beryl as barrel instead of berl. Nevertheless it is Beryl like Burl. Burl Ives, the rudolph the rednose reindeer singer.

I too, love potatoes.

my dad was saying the other day that they can only puncture the “web” in between your fingers and I did not correct him but i was thinking to myself, nah that ain’t right? surely that can’t be right?! as if they are somehow “less” dangerous if they have weak jaws? I’m nah nah I’ll just definitely continue observing from afar if I see one. But once, I did pick up a copperhead with the pinch head method

i am that specific age of “millennial” who remembers when they did a love boat remake in the late nineties or early 2000s. haha and prior to that I was totally unaware of the original love boat series. I am glad about Professor’s injection of humor into this bad no good situation!😅
