@adissentingopinion848 Autopilot disengages because it doesn't know what to do, rather than specifically for legal reasons.

If someone demands that I turn my microphone on, they get to deal with the earrape that is a 2U server case with its fans on full blast.
48
Same. I cannot use VR at all, so I'd just have to find another job.
35
If you think it's a joke, tell me how you would design a chip to defend against it.
27
It goes fast because it is told to do so. Not the manufacturer's fault that their product was commanded to do something unsafe.
27
@JunohProductions Only a developer would know for sure, but I imagine Autopilot would hand off control to the collision avoidance system.
27
...until someone's remotely executing arbitrary code on your device. Then you'd better hope that they bothered to include failsafes against a rogue actor on the CANBUS.
26
@realcartoongirl Some Linux distros support Active Directory.
15
@aragornderheld Although not exactly correct, it could be used to describe a totalitarian state run by one or more very large corporations.

This is why I refuse to have a car without a mechanical parking brake.
8
I was about to write about smart locks being able to be unlocked or removed from the inside, but then I remembered that most humans aren't smart enough to do that. They'd just wait in the house until either they die or the fire department kicks in the door.
8
Unfortunately, this trend has nothing to do with the powertrain. They're putting it everywhere. The only solution is to buy a car made prior to 2010.
7
Or just add a bypass switch.
7
@aetheralmeowstic2392 It's in the BIOS.
6
I could totally see them adding a feature to the various controllers in the car such that they need a key from Skynet every so often or they brick themselves. That way, if you disconnect the car from the cloud, every single part of the system would go into lockdown mode at the end of the month.
5
Why would you implement this by reducing power, instead of setting a speed limiter?
4
Maybe they thought the accelerator had to be kept pressed at all times?
4
Assuming the safety system is somehow bypassed, Autopilot will do one of two things: If it uses normal, pre-single-stack Autopilot: It will continue going until the battery runs out. If it somehow manages to go off the interstate, it will probably either crash or stop in the middle of the road. If it uses FSD Beta: There is a good chance that it will reach the destination safely and stop. (Automatic parking won't be available with FSD until v11)

@kvdrr Plotter.
3
Not only this, but a mandatory connection to a centralized traffic management system.
3
While smart meters aren't in a position to listen to conversations, they are able to listen to your power. For example, they can tell the difference between a resistive load (a heater or incandescent lightbulb), an inductive load (like a fan motor or AC compressor), a brushed motor (like in a tool), and a switching power supply. An example for a use of this data is a survey of when customers tend to do laundry.
3
This would likely be implemented by a currently nonexistent system that allows autonomous vehicles to communicate with each other and with infrastructure.
3
Not because of this, but I will also be switching when 10 becomes EOL.
2
Which is why there should ALWAYS be a mechanical connection between the controls and the outputs. If the computer becomes evil or there is a loss of electric power, I should still be able to steer, apply the brakes, and turn the engine off.
2
Same. I have zero depth perception and VR is completely unusable. It's like being fed garbage data.
1
@realEchoz Which is completely overkill. The $18,000 audio mixer that I use at work only does 192.
1
@realEchoz Nope, just checked. It says "192kbps" right on the button. The only other options are 96 and 128. I imagine it's not meant as a primary means of recording.
1
@realEchoz That's to a USB flash drive.
1
@realEchoz It's a Yamaha QL, first released in 2014.
1
I'd expect it to be heavily locked down.
1
Also, look at a teardown of a Juicero machine. Those engineers were completely out of their minds.
1
@ChucksSEADnDEAD That's why my reply was questioning the power limit in the first place, and suggesting a speed limit instead, which doesn't cut power until the set speed is reached.
1
Teslas are supposed to stop if you haven't applied force to the steering wheel for a while. Older versions, however, could be fooled with a small weight.
1
This already exists. It senses the force on the steering wheel and will stop if the timer runs out.

@lf7911 ✅
1
I have a completely automated home, but it all runs on a mostly separate network under HomeAssistant.
1
@JoeOvercoat This should be changing with Autopilot v11.
