I disagree with the lawnmower one, given the mower has a gas engine and blades that can be disconnected from it. If I'm getting up for 3 seconds to move a trash can, I'd rather let the engine idle than spend 30 seconds trying to get the engine to restart, putting excess wear on the components. This is the same reason I disabled the brake on my drill, shorting out the motor to stop it faster makes the brushes wear out more quickly, and the motor continuing to spin for half a second does not pose a meaningful safety hazard.

That's exactly how it was configured. It was just bypassed.

Radiation does not affect magnetic fields like you would find in a motor. What likely happened here is something got caught on the track, and the source was inadvertently raised with the worker still in the room.
