In an apocalypse, recharging would be a non-issue because I'd be hoarding solar panels to keep my house (and truck) very well powered. Also, ammunition for larger guns could be made from rebar or other scrap metal.

@KertaDrake Quiet is a tactical advantage.

Unnecessary consumables + complexity + moving parts + points of failure.

For a useful amount of power, you'd probably need to switch to a ~400V system, at multiple tens of thousands of amps. And also rifle the barrel, which would likely need to be made of some advanced composite ceramic hybrid.
2
Also consider that this gun is firing with basically zero power compared to a practical weapon. It sounds like a stapler because it has about as much power as one. (40V at maybe a few hundred amps) A real gun (400V at a few tens of thousands of amps) would make at least a solid thump.
2
Likely need a different barrel material that can be rifled. Certain types of carbon fiber could work.
2
Rails have the advantage of being easy to design and build, but are lacking in efficiency, and the rails tend to erode and need frequent replacement.
2
You want to minimize the gap between the coil and the projectile. Also fins are expensive.

Would 10,000 amps at 400V help?
1
Probably need a 400 volt system, but high voltage is scary. Rounds with fins are expensive. It's cheaper just to make a cylinder with a pointy end.
1
Definitely need a hardware safety switch that not only disables the firing command, but also cuts 5V power to the modules that switch on the coils.
1
Likely won't see a true pistol for a long time. No room for the electronics.
1
Maybe we could have the machine that turns long rods into projectiles put a chamfer on one end.
1
This is coil. Rail is very different.

@beerrox711 >recoilless A coilgun with the same power as a given conventional gun will have the exact same amount of recoil.
1
Need a long projectile to accelerate it properly.
1
If they choose to rifle the projectile instead of the gun, the bullets would look just like drill bits.
1
Bus bars would likely be far cheaper and could double as heatsinks.
1
This. If you can't rifle the barrel, shoot pointy drill bit.
1
Not really possible to do with normal capacitor making machines. Would cost several thousand dollars per unit assuming production volume is about 500 and someone at the capacitor company volunteers.
1
Spinning them up would add unnecessary complexity. Just rifle either the barrel or the projectile.
1
Also massive complexity and reduced power.
