@armondtanz Tell me you don't understand software engineering without telling me you don't understand software engineering:

@armondtanz Once the software is written the job isn't about writing code anymore, it's about testing the implementation, document it, etc. We still need to be around to scale the infrastructure (because it would be difficult to hire new engineers who are unfamiliar with the codebase later on) and also to work on internal business projects (like shared libraries, management tools, etc.). Obviously Twitter didn't need active engineers, they just needed to have them around. It's a different story for other positions like moderation, customer service, ad-ops, etc. and I'm not familiar enough with these jobs to have a fair take on them. But you wanna know some really interesting? Twitter never had to mass-fire their employees in a long time because the business-model worked. It's when Elon decided to fuck up with the advertiser bag that all of the sudden they had to save on their bottom lines. And that's proof of his incompetence.

@paulgibbon5991 If they worked at Twitter best believe they won't be unemployed for long. Sad thing is that it will be the same problem with whatever new company they'll work for unfortunately because like you said they are on work visa.

It's the perfect opportunity for them to move to a new state and get any job they want. When a software engineer worked on such a big infrastructure, all door is open to them (thinking about management roles). They just need to the leave the valley unfortunately.

The reason why it's extra ironic is because Mastodon isn't just a competitor, it's a open-source free speech advocate. It is the only social media platform that can be self-hosted and where the host make up the ToS. Anyone can run and operate an instance of Mastodon for free. Like you would make a discord server but not have Discord control it in any way shape or form. People use Mastodon for journalism, to avoid censorship, for internal communication uses, etc... Although the vast majority of users are hipsters that don't want their data to be collected so the popular instances are filled with libs, crypto-bros, anarchists, etc... You get the idea.

@meowiestwo Yeah lol I was talking about their new job, they need to look for job offers outside the valley if they want a better position. Usually that's what software engineers do anyway, FAANG is a jump boost.

@meowiestwo yep 👍

@meowiestwo Seems like you misread my comment, what I meant to say is that since the most reputable companies are in Silicon Valley you would expect software engineers to aim at working there. They do for some time, but if they ever want to rank up and secure themselves a better position they need to look at companies outside the valley, generally you see people moving to Vegas for this exact reason. Sorry if I confused you.

Gender neutral gold diggers, plain and simple.

@konnermorris1753 I mean at this point it wouldn't surprise Elon is fighting to platform white supremacists and other extremists.
