Most of the countries Britain conquered didn't have firearms at all; none of them had machine guns. British military technology has been superior for a long time. Although not necessary invented by the British, Britain first mass deployed: long bows; steam turbine warships; fighter aircraft; tanks; submarines with torpedoes, and military use of computers (the Royal Navy had mechanical computers to aim guns before electronics was invented.) And that's a non-exhaustive list of firsts.
