Darwin covered hybridisation in chapter 8 of Origin of Species. He is clear that any benefit is only to the first generation. Subsequent generations go downhill. Ask a farmer if you can mix two pedigree herds and get a third pedigree herd. The answer is no. When they make this sort of cross in cows the results are eaten! They are not used for breeding.

Neanderthals are not strictly-speaking entirely extinct, since Europeans have 2-3% Neanderthal DNA. Because not all Europeans have the same 2-3% about 20% of the overall Neanderthal genome is preserved. However, this 'alien' DNA is associated with various diseases and not good for the carriers; not least because it has given us gingers!
