  1. Even in sterile modern times squaddies can describe going to war as euphoric. In pre-modern times war was a major breeding opportunity. Likely we all have instincts we don't use today. Take for example mothers who are keen to send their sons to war despite the chance of them dying. Evolution doesn't care if a mother never meets her grandchildren - the instinct to send her sons into "breeding opportunities" will none the less be selected for.
