  3. You should all check out Abood v. Detroit Board of Education, the case law precedent that Janus overturned. The unions used to assess "service fees" that were equivalent to unions dues from NON-UNION members in what is called an agency shop clause (part of the collective bargaining agreement). They justified this by saying that they represented non-union members as well as union members in collective bargaining agreements. Non-union members argued that the unions were violating their 1st and 14th amendment rights, insofar as they were also using dues/assessments for political activities. So, the Abood decision banned unions from using non-union fees for political activities and kept the agency shop clause as legal/constitutional. Union members pay their dues willingly, and people aren't forced to be in the union.
