  1. Socialism is just a malleable term for an ideology, that of which could vary or be manipulated by semantics in many ways. Hitler described himself as a socialist, but not a Marxian socialist. He engineered his own definition for socialist that would actually kind of make sense to most right wing people. Venezuela calls itself a federal republic; it is not. North Korea calls itself a Democratic People's Republic; it is not. The Nordic countries call their state welfarism model "Nordic Capitalism;" it is not, entirely. Many of these nations have key sectors of the economy nationalized. At the end of the day, all of these things are not what they say they are.

  2. Marx sometimes used the two terms interchangeably, but then he also did elaborate on the fact that socialism was the road towards true communism. So really, true communism has never been fully achieved. Therefore, calling any country communist is patently false. They are simply socialist (at varying degrees) and on their way towards communism. I think there is definitely a "tipping point." Scandinavia, most of Western Europe, and the Commonwealth nations are descending towards full socialist Hell status. The U.S. is still doing a balancing act between being socialist and being capitalist/corporatist. We're fucked unless we have a Pinochet take over and start giving socialists free helicopter rides. :)
