Tarl, who gives a shit if police have the ability to use military gear? They deal with combat situations at times. Furthermore, they won't wear this gear when conducting routine patrols. It isn't about image at all, because the image will continue to be the same in 99% of situations. Police aren't going to be walking their beats in full battle rattle if this ban is reversed. Also, the idea that a cop is not vetted more than any normal individual is retarded, and shows how little Styx knows about the selection process in law enforcement. The vast majority of scumbags that make it through the rigorous selection process, interview panel, physical fitness test, psychological test, and medical tests get removed by way of an extensive background investigation, boot camp style academy, and year long field training officer phase. Getting a police job is 10 times more difficult than getting 99% of jobs out there, and they get paid less than average wages.

@ Dennis Helgi: Of course, what possible use could the police have for a battle tank? The National Guard can be called upon for situations that require that type of heavy weaponry. As an earlier commenter stated, this is mostly so police have access to cheap and good military grade body armor and ammunition. Departments have to buy their ammo and gear through normal retailers like Galls and Grainger. If they had access to federal equipment produced under massive military contracts, they would have access to cheaper, and in many cases better gear. Look at the entry vehicles SWAT teams are driving around already. Do you know how much those things cost? Hundreds of thousands, when they could be driving converted military equipment and shooting military ammo for training that would otherwise just be rusting away in some ammo depot.

@ Reactionary Monarchist: I suppose it depends on what gear they are given and the applications in which they can use that gear. If legal framework was developed specifying what situations that gear was authorized for use, I don't see how it is any different from what they have now. Most tactical police gear is comparable to military equipment with the exception of crew served weapons. Some SWAT teams already carry fully automatic weapons. Agencies like the Border Patrol are essentially already paramilitary. Most SWAT teams you see are outfitted like military special operations forces. That doesn't mean that patrol cops will be dressed that way or outfitted with that gear.

I don't know why, but most people don't know that the majority of American civilians with some cash can go to a military auction and buy M35 Deuce and a Half trucks, Humvees, M113 APC battle buses, Gama Goats, M1117 Guardians... all kinds of shit. You can even buy decommissioned battle tanks. lol Sure, I don't know much about the mythology behind elves, only the basics, but I'd love to hear some trivia.

Inisfad that is a massive generalization. Most police recruits are selfless idealists that think they can make a difference. A few are moralists and control freaks that think the world should operate the way they see fit. And still fewer are the hotheads and the insufferable pricks. The vast majority of mentally unhealthy individuals get weeded out of the selection process or get fired for doing something illegal within a few years of being sworn. Still, there is a fine line. You don't want patsies and choir boys and you don't want sociopaths either. You want someone that is smart, affable, and not a pussy, which is really pretty rare. Most cops are extremely patient and affable once they reach their mid-30s. They simply must be by nature, or else their job becomes impossible or at least way more difficult than it needs to be. Cops that escalate rather than deescalate situations rarely complete FTO, let alone a full career in law enforcement.

JP Robson I can almost guarantee you that the vast majority of European cops would never want to do the job that American cops have to do, nor would any of those pussies make it through the selection process. I've seen the way Swedish, British, French, and German cops operate. It is rumored that around 80% of Swedish police are contemplating resigning if the problems continue with migrants in Sweden. American cops have been dealing with scum like that for decades, centuries even. The Europeans might train for two years prior to working the streets, but they still act like complete pussies and fail to act appropriately in the few situations that they actually have to do anything dangerous or of importance. Street work is the only thing that truly teaches someone how to work in law enforcement. It is not a job you can learn in a college classroom.

Inisfad What you're trying to explain is called the Posse Comitatus Act, which limits the feds power to use the military to enforce domestic policies (law enforcement). This is not a Posse Comitatus issue, because this has to do with the military. The police will not gain access to military weaponry through the reversal of this act. You will not see the police securing surface to air missiles or fully operational tanks or shouldering M240s Animal Mother style for routine patrols. That is ridiculous. This is simply about equipment, not legal authority or weaponry. Just because someone is dressed as something or uses certain equipment does not make them that thing. This ban is in effect because people like yourself are too fucking stupid and paranoid to realize that difference. You can buy medical equipment and masquerade around as a doctor, but that does not make you a licensed physician. This is all just about saving the police money, and using surplus military gear and ammo instead of having departments and SOs buy it at retail value.
