They are far-Left and Euro-naïve. They would embrace EU open border politics if they achieved independence. This movement isn't about nativism and populism, it is about economics.

The Catalonia independence movement is far-Leftist and Euro-naïve in nature, similar to Scottish independence movement. The name Scottish "Nationalist" Party is counterintuitive, in that no nationalist government would embrace the most corrupt post-nationalist organization in the world. I think most people don't realize that these secession movements can be bad for populist nationalism unless the seceding region is Eurosceptic. They see the Balkanizing of these regions and automatically think it is good for national sovereignty.

Caleb Ford is correct. You are arguing for what already exists. Catalonia already has autonomy; what they want is sovereignty. Catalonia, Aragon, Navarre, Basque Country, Andalusia, Galicia, etc. all have status as nationalities, but they are autonomous communities under the control of a decentralized unitary state.

If California did secede, they would be in insurrection, and the Free State of Jefferson Movement could go directly to Congress to petition for a new state in Northern California. This is how West Virginia was formed; the Wheeling Conventions, which occurred after Virginia seceded during the Civil War, established West Virginia as a new state. That is the only reason I am pro-CalExit. It would also be funny to see Sacramento get stripped of its power, dominated, and then lose the Northern portion of the state.

Maximum Mortis CA is already flooded by Hispanic illegals. That is what they want, so let them have it. So long as Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, and possibly a newly formed State of Jefferson enforced border security, it would be California's problem at that point.

@ Clarence: The LA Basin and southern valley areas would be fucked for sure, and would need to build desalination plants. They should have done this a long time ago, but of course this is CA we're talking about. The northern valley and the Bay Area is supplied by the Sacramento and San Joaquin River deltas and the Hetch Hetchy reservoir. Hispanics are marginally socially conservative and family oriented, but they are conditioned to dependence and even entitlement to state benefits. Calexit would be a disaster, but what would emerge (hopefully) would be a conservative/libertarian majority-White paradise in the north (the SOJ), and a socialist multicultural hellscape in the south that would implode upon itself within decades. It would be a fitting end to California and as long as contiguous states protect their borders, most of the illegal Hispanics would immigrate back to Mexico, at which time the U.S. could annex CA again without it being a net negative.

@CopperGaming29: the fiscal health of California is shit, but it is still the 6th largest economy in the world. Losing CA would be economically crippling to the U.S. Not to mention, CA is also the breadbasket of the nation, and is top-10 in WORLD agriculture production. People should realize this.

@ Tommy O Donovan: I have never considered a Canadian province becoming a state. Is Calgary based, or is it a multicultural Leftist epicenter of retardation like Vancouver?

@ Angel Eyes: I deplore cognitive dissonance more than ignorance in many ways. To me, it is a greater offense to be dishonest than to be unenlightened. That is the thing that drives a person insane when dealing with the Left. "Of course, with the religion of special needs, anything you say can potentially insult 'progressives,' as blaming Islam for anything at all is out of the question. However, since Islam is so clearly to blame for so much, this creates the kind of cognitive dissonance in 'progressives' that we typically associate with religious believers. When reality can't be squared with dogma, they somehow end up believing both and seeing no contradiction. So 'progressives' can see very well that Islam is a massive problem in the West, but it can't be, so it isn't...tra la la la la..." ~Grandmaster Pat Condell.

@Maximum Mortis: It would indeed be a glorious thing to behold. CalExit would also drive the vast majority of the 5 million+ mostly upper and middle class California conservatives into other states. Think about the economic and political impact that would have on CA, losing all of that population and tax base. It would increase the economies and political clout of neighboring conservative and swing states monumentally. Almost 4.5 million people voted for Trump in CA as opposed to almost 4.7 million in Texas, and 4.6 million in Florida. If the SOJ was formed in the North, there would be a land grab and that state would become a powerhouse with all of its natural resources, agricultural potential, infrastructure projects to complete, housing development, etc. I was born in Northern CA and was forced out by the Leftist insanity and oppressive taxes. I would love to move back to my home if it became a different state, invest in real estate and business, and run for office. Sign the State of Jefferson Declaration. soj51.org

@AngelEyes: Good point, but belief perseverance is a hard thing to overcome. Even if the EU remains silent and does nothing to help them, the Catalans may still blindly follow them.
2
@Angel Eyes: I agree with your analysis. Becoming red pilled is like a 12-step program, the first step is admitting you have a problem. Lol

@Graeme Patrick: Yes, they are historically totally different, but Catalonia is recognized as having a status of nationality as well.

Well, autonomy does not mean sovereignty. They still have representation in the Cortes Generales.
