For those who don't know, actors and entertainers were considered equal to slaves and prostitutes in ancient Rome. The Romans' reasoning was that a person who basically lies and "acts" like they're someone else as a profession was duplicitous and not worthy of respect. Some emperors did not even allow actors to have any contact with the upper classes. In a society where honesty, merit, personal accomplishments and pursuit of civic virtue were held in the highest regard, it makes sense. Our people idolize them, the Romans held them in contempt.
