Still a shit thing to do. To ‘have to do’ maybe more appropriate phrasing. The French needed a scapegoat. They blamed, socialist, communists, the unions, the liberals and, of course, the perfidious Albion. Catapult was just what they needed to cement the conspiracy.
My grandfathers best friend, a big Welshman called ‘Taffy’* lost his brother - an observer in the back of a Lysander - shot down by French fighters in February 1940 over the Moselle forest. He couldn’t stand the French. He did get to fight them (RHA) in Syria. Interestingly, the French lasted longer against us in Madagascar and again in Syria in ‘41 than they did against the Nazis in ‘40.
*my grandfather, a Scot, was of course, called ‘Jock’. No imagination, these pongos.
