  1. Impressed the Americans though! Catapult was awful. Probably the right thing to do at the time, though. Shitty thing to have to do. The French don’t cover themselves in glory here either. Hindsight is great.

  2. Still a shit thing to do. To ‘have to do’ maybe more appropriate phrasing. The French needed a scapegoat. They blamed, socialist, communists, the unions, the liberals and, of course, the perfidious Albion. Catapult was just what they needed to cement the conspiracy. My grandfathers best friend, a big Welshman called ‘Taffy’* lost his brother - an observer in the back of a Lysander - shot down by French fighters in February 1940 over the Moselle forest. He couldn’t stand the French. He did get to fight them (RHA) in Syria. Interestingly, the French lasted longer against us in Madagascar and again in Syria in ‘41 than they did against the Nazis in ‘40. *my grandfather, a Scot, was of course, called ‘Jock’. No imagination, these pongos.

  8. Wasn’t there a story that the Yanks didn’t trust the Brits ‘cos spies and refused to share the H-Bomb research? To get around this, the UK detonated two fission bombs together to mimic a H-bomb explosion and said “hey! We got H-bomb,too! No need to be all coy with your research now, what?” Anyone else hear this one?
