  4. I was chatting to a guy last year and he was very critical of the ussr and, therefore, communism in a standard sort of western way. So I pointed out that communism had taken Russia from a backward and near feudal agricultural economy to the second most powerful country in the world that defeated nazism put a man in space etc etc. He wasn’t impressed. Dissonance, I think. It’s uncomfortable.

  5. I ended up in an awful argument with a younger comrade as I suggested that being under the British empire was probably the least bad. I hadn’t for one instant suggested that empires were a good thing but they seemed to think that was what I was suggesting and it got very silly. It pissed me off to be honest because had they been arguing with a right wing opponent they’d have been torn to bits with that kind of response. Empires were probably inevitable but that doesn’t make them good or right. A bit like catching the flu. Inevitable but not a good thing.
