There’s a great interview with a Luftwaffe navigator who spent most of the war in Scotland and Canada in a pow camps. He described being attacked by a Hurricane witha French tricolour mini flag. Next op he got shot up by a hurri with a Polish mini flag. Shortly afterwards he was shot down by a hurricane with a Czech flag. His comments about this state of affairs were understandable. Great vid. Never heard of this kite - which is exactly what I’m looking forward in this sort of channel.

“Well, with a name like Tiger Shark it’d better be good!!”
44
Winkle could land Concorde on a lifeboat.
34
Definition of the word ‘Ego’: That little bit of Argentinian in all of us. (South American humour:)
23
Reading Patrick Gibbs ‘Torpedo Leader’ it sounds like any torpedo attack, no matter what the aircraft utilised, was extremely hazardous.
23
Another aircraft I knew bugger all about. Cheers mate.
22
When I saw ‘Spitfire’ I did think “oh, ok. Going for the Yankee Dollar are we”.Yea of little etc etc. My bad:)
22
All the way through I was saying to myself... Martin Baker, Martin Baker.... why do I know that name??
21
Well done for this. Shows class mate! Being able to calmly reassess. Nice one.

The Middle East is to the early 21st century what the Balkans was to the early 20th century.
17
Very good point.
14
The BEF was the most mechanised military units in the world at the time. So they had a lot of kit to leave behind.
12
Well done, Ed - great video. I’d rather be doing somethings than sitting on my arse watching it unfold. I’ve been checking for any agencies looking for medical staff. If I find anything I’ll post it. I know a lot of medical trainee folk would like to do stuff rather than just seeing the suffering on a screen. (Time listen to 5:45 by ‘Gang of Four’). Anyway, well done again.

I would NOT have looked forward to landing that chin in a carrier deck heaving up and down!

Fascinating. Kill the messengers. While they’ve air in their lungs they can relay the info. But probably just plain murder.

I very nearly got all seven kinds of shite kicked out of me in an Irish bar in Chicago for mentioning that the IRA stated “a United Ireland under a Marxist government” as a goal. Despite being quite sympathetic to Irish republicanism and very well read on the history I found that impressions and facts were quite some way apart in the opinions of the patrons of this establishment. Fortunately, I decided on the discretion/valour/run! tactic otherwise it may have ugly. Also, as a side note, can someone please do a piece on why the PIAT is a bandwagonesque maligned weapon?
10
Very clever. And very interesting. Cheers. One often unknown down side of the ‘back blast’ type launchers was that, in confined spaces, the sudden injection of expanding hot gas would increase the air pressure in the area to the extent that it could cause severe injury to the launcher crew - usually ear and brain injuries. PIAT anyone?
9
That’s very true and a really fucking long sentence. Do you have gills?:)

It would be nice to hear just once that we didn’t tuck up the indigenous people we ‘used’ once hostilities/war was over.
7
Great work Ed. Your enthusiasm comes through on your narrative and is infectious!
7
Had it made it into combat the gun camera footage would have been brutal. Great vid again Edd.
7
Italy in WW2 is a very nuanced subject. Well equipped and motivated units did well.
7
@benholroyd5221 lol:) Brexit is a joke. And that’s it. (Probably regret mentioning the ‘B’ word now:)
6
Mr Nash. I owe you an apology. I had penned you in the wrong pigeon hole. While I’ve loved your work genuinely I’ve though of it as the usual type of ‘superficial’ overview of the world. This has shown me wrong. Well done. And all done on this video. Although it has scared the living shite out of m, it’s very very well presented scripted and thoughtful. Good man!
6
It sounds like ‘combat’ saw the Avro Manchester.

The Hurricane was a terrible aircraft to ditch in due to its air intake under its belly as this would flip the plane arse over tit which was bad. Very bad. Fulmars where better as they had longer range and much more ammo but were very heavy and had a crew of two. Plus the FAA needed its Fulmars. Much maligned aircraft the Fulmar. Most successful FAA fighter of the war. True dat...

“Soft Launch” - one reason why PIATs were such great weapons back in the day…..innit. Great job Ed.

@petersouthernboy6327 … and age maybe. It’s certainly making me less reliable.

I worked on a ward where the consultant and the senior nurse where from the opposite sides of the Argentine political spectrum. It was a bit tense sometimes.
4
There were a couple of exceptions to the large cannon in the nose theory. Airocobra comes to mind.
4
I’m sure they’ve missed the boat. They could have found the Messi had an English grandparent 15 years ago and we’d have let them have anything they wanted.
4
KIA - not a great name for a military unit.
4
........ and so it begins. Uzi nine mm anyone?

I spoke with a geezer at a festival in Oxfordshire who said that his step father had flown WW’s and they had been trying to get the go ahead for ‘intruder missions’ (his term) during the B of B. They wanted to follow the bombers back to their aerodromes and hit them as they landed. However, the brass “fucked about too much” ( his words again) and by the time it was green lighted the battle had essentially ended. The only other thing I’d heard was the WWs were being looked at by the FAA. They wanted a navalised version but got bogged down with whether to have an extra crewman or not.

Excellent work, comrade.

Chilling …… that someone should invent such cobblers. To quote Carl ‘Hail’ Sagan “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence”. Nice one, though. :)
3
“Dove”…….”Dove”!!!!!! Told you this would happen!!
3
Explosive bolts on the rear prop for emergency exits.

Every time I see i Mirage I think ‘Saturday mornings and ‘The Aeronauts’’. (Showing my age or what?).

@EdNashsMilitaryMatters that’s great. My father in law was in the Black Watch as a loader in a Bazooka (super) team. His instructor said he’d have rather had a PIAT - bear in mind this is the 1950’s. The reason he said was that shooting a bazooka had such a large WDS weapon discharge signature (I made that up:) that you would be instantly counter batteried. Also you could fire a PIAT from inside a room or bunker. Firing a rocket from an enclosed space caused such sudden increase in air pressure due to expanding exhaust gas that it could kill or at least deafen. Then there’s the whole setting stuff on fire thing. I think there’s a good tale of a typical British military death cult type guy at Arnhem who took out a load of Tigers by firing his PIAT from upstairs and roof tops. I get miffed about this topic because of the lazy and bandwagon history. Every report was just a rehash of a previous report etc and non had an actual source. Yes it kicked like a bastard and yes it didn’t always cycle but actually it was ok and as mentioned had some very useful advantages over rocket projectiles. Rant over, ta.

@smellysam Vety Italian, then! I had an Italian motorbike once. Beautiful, Powerful and fast. And no fecking use at all if it was damp or cold.
3
Great work Edwardo. Your narration is so good now. Very pro, mate. Well done etc etc :)
3
What a beast. Convair next? Incidentally, I was reading a book about the atom bomb development and I found that the B29 had so many teething issues that there was a contingency for RAF Lancasters to drop the Bombs. In fact, it was only politics that pushed the B52s into the final attack as it was thought it wouldn’t be ready in time.
3
Great vid, matey - Very informative. SAAB say don’t cash the check until payday:) One of the things the (much maligned) PIAT was good for was firing from enclosed spaces. The rapid expansion of gases in a confined space can deafen and concuss or even kill the user. Then there’s the whole burny burny thing. Also, pretty sure the price is gonna be well below the Javlin $$$$$

Russia failed to take the Ukraine so I don’t think Europe has much to worry about.
3
Can anyone confirm the existence of a British gull winged naval interceptor plan circa 1940? I’m sure I saw one recently on a video but I can’t remember where). It was basically a very close copy of the Spit but heavily navalised.
3
Bloody crabs made a bollocks of WW2. Glad the FAA got shot of them!:) Great video. Needs more unconditional love for the Fulmar, though. ( Fullies v German LBF ratio of kill:loss was 1:1 although the cohort is tiny weeny).
3
I think Ive seen these before a lot but I just thought them to be Wimpies. Nice touch at the end. A few hours in a tiny dingy in the North Sea and the sight of a Warwick would be very, very welcome. I think I read somewhere that the Beaufort and mossie squadrons attacking Norway would regularly have the Warwick crews over for a thank you bash. Anyone confirm this?
3
@Mini13Mini Well, if they dropped me a boat in the middle of Dogger Bank while I was in nowt but my Mae West I’d certainly buy them a pint of ten.
