  1. There was no competition in East Germany for the West. The factories produced to maintain a workforce not because there was demand for the product. These factories were obsolete and completely uncompetitive and were sold at market value.

  2. I was in Berlin last year and saw this park of Soviet monuments. It's very impressive and total propaganda, as mentioned. It's amazing how much of East Germany is still influenced by nostalgia for the communist era. I was also in Berlin in 1989 before the wall came down and crossed into the East. It was like moving into a world of black and white from one of color.
