  1. The Whites did not withdraw from the colony and left it to the Blacks. There was a slave revolt, the only successful one in history, I believe, defeat of French forces sent to reconquer the colony and a massacre of Whites remaining on the island. The French sent a fleet to the island and demanded reparations for the liberty of the island, which was agreed to. There is a great deal more to the history but it is far more complex than being presented.
