  1. English is at its root Germanic but the more advanced words are French. The mix is about 45/45% It is in fact a grand mix of two principal tongues with a sprinkling of various other loan words from other languages as well.

  2. The 5 great river civilizations were the primers for everyone else, save in the Americas. Mesopotamia and Egypt likely, via trade and cultural contacts, influenced Greece but there are not a great many direct lines between culture X and culture Y. Probably this took place over a long time and is not part of recorded history. The Greeks however, definitely influenced the Romans as the Romans did with everyone else in Europe and N. Africa. We also see certain indirect influences from Mesopotamia and Egypt on Greece, such as early statuary, likely mathematics as well and religion possibly but the Minoan civilization probably had a more direct impact, than either Egypt or Mesopotamia on the Greeks and civilizationally speaking, was clearly superior to the Greeks, early on. We see echoes of this in certain myths such as the Minotaur and Theseus for example.
