The US wants to stop proliferation for multiple reasons but the chief purpose is based upon the very reasonable assumption that the more nations with these weapons, the more likely they will be used. The US also opposed Israel gaining nuclear weapons but it was too late. Just as with India, Pakistan and N. Korea, we failed to stop these states from making nukes. Israel is a very responsible nation. Iraq and Iran are not. If all nations were responsible, then the case to prevent everyone from gaining nuclear weapons would be largely muted. Everyone knows this.
