I question the numbers given. The Roman Empire from Britain to Morocco to Egypt to Romania, consisted of approximately 70 million people. The idea that 500,000 new slaves were captured per annum, seems highly unlikely. Where would such numbers come from? Certainly vast stretches of the continent would have been depopulated very rapidly if these numbers held and then depopulation would have ensued. Though slavery was much larger in the Roman Empire than during the Atlantic slave trade, these numbers are likely bogus. The longevity of slaves also is problematic and only makes sense given the very high infant mortality rate. Once a child had hit 5 years of age they were likely to live some 42 years. Likewise, most slaves taken in war, would be well past 17 years of age so...
