Thankfully the Maldivian people protested his arrival and he had no choice but to leave.

So you're a supporter of the Rajapaksas?

@starrynight43451 Where are you getting this "communist party" thing from? These are just protestors. Also, that elected government has resulted in people starving. Not to mention that the elected leader is comfortably living while the general population suffers. I don't know how anybody could support that but such people exist.

@durian111 Clearly not anymore considering that everybody has turned on him. I remember thinking that something like this was probably meant to happen to the country in order to wake people up from the cycle of disaster they have been a part of for so long. It seems now Sri Lankan people finally want something different and they seem to have finally lived up to the words that Lee Kuan Yew said about Sri Lanka decades back.

Why do you say that, genuinely curious? The US tried to use Sri Lanka to contain China in 2019 by trying to get them to sign a SOFA and MCC so they could station US troops in the country in order to surround China on three sides but there were protests in Sri Lanka and the agreements weren't signed. In reality, US influence in virtually non-existent in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is like Myanmar, it falls under the economic and political influence of India, China and Japan just like Myanmar.

Sri Lankans are ethnically diverse. There are 5 main ethnic groups in Sri Lanka: Sinhalese, Tamils, Moors, Malays and Burghers/Eurasian with smaller minorities of indigenous Vedda, Chinese, Chetties, Bohras and Malayalis. Most Sri Lankans are genetically closer to Maldivians and South Indians.

@inisipisTV No, Sri Lanka was never a part of British India. They were ruled as a separate Crown Colony known as British Ceylon. British India was broken up into India, Pakistan and Bangladesh due to religion (Hindu vs Muslim). Most Sri Lankans are Buddhists and have no problem with Hindus.

You need to do your research. Sri Lanka has edged closer to impeachment in the past regarding its previous president. The thing you're not understanding is that this is Gotabaya Rajapaksa who is part of a powerful political dynasty. He changed laws and stole so much money from the people (including money amounting to reportedly US$17 million which was found in his residence). You really think the Rajapaksas are going to allow for an impeachment trial after everything they have done? The Rajapaksas are just like the Marcos family of the Philippines, they're extremely powerful and evil people who will break rules to suit them. The Sri Lankan people are angry and lost everything they had, they did the absolute right thing to storm the presidential palace. After months of peaceful protests, led by high school and university students, nothing happened. They just kept losing more and more.

That's not a solution. Taking over countries is not the solution and why India? The richest country in South Asia is the Maldives which is also a neighbour of Sri Lanka.

That's because the monks are suffering too.

I think the US wants to hep but traditionally speaking, Sri Lanka falls under the influence of India, China and Japan. Early on during the crisis, long before the storming of the palace, India, China, Japan and Bangladesh provided financial assistance.
