  5. The fact that only 40% of Australians now view the US favourably is a huge blow to US soft power in the country and the wider Asia-Pacific region. For the longest time, the Americans have used the Australians as cannon fodder to represent American interests in Asia but the tides are changing. In the end, Australia's closest geographical neighbours are Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Indonesia - Asia-Pacific nations. The US is far away.
