@falsemcnuggethope Studying online was fun for some time but in the long run it's not viable. That's my opinion. There are many things you lose out on with online study. For many in my state in my country (Australia) we had to spend 2 academic years online. While 2020 was interesting for online study by 2021, all of the primary, high school and university students were very fatigued.

@fatboyRAY24 COVID-19 was a turning point in world history and just as the world began learning to live with the virus, Russia invaded Ukraine. The political divide between Global North and Global South had already begun to emerge once again in 2021 with vaccine distribution but 2022 saw the division become even more stark as a result of the Ukraine War. "Multipolar world" and "dedollarisation" may be words we hear a lot in 2023, especially with what's going on in the East (China, India, Russia).

It's strange of you to correlate this with cancel culture and enforce a purely American/Western-centric issue onto the rest of the world. Nobody cares about cancel culture in the countries where these objects were stolen from. They deserve to belong in museums in the countries of their origin. You wouldn't like if somebody stole something of yours. It's not fair to steal other countries' artefacts. Not to mention, that these objects are stolen from their countries' of origin and represent important aspects of these cultures but at the same time, certain Western countries will send Christian missionaries to remote areas of these countries, where these objects were stolen, in order to convert them to Christianity.
1
It does matter if they're stolen because they deserve to be displayed in museums in the countries where these artefacts were created, not all the way in the UK.
1
Plain and simple, it's stolen. Idk why you're trying to justify stealing.

@vlanor6048 The Kafala system doesn't exist across the whole world. Qatar and the rest of the Gulf were built by foreigners (including white collar workers) and most of the locals don't work. Remove the foreigners (blue and white collar workers) and those countries will collapse overnight because there will ne no workforce to hold these countries up.
1
Send them back to where they came from. Something, many in the UK would be familiar with.

@juliaxiao5320 ...because nobody else in the world cares about that stuff apart from China.

@ashtondolce4446 Yes I agree with your comment, well said. Also, Vox could have also included how Hong Kong had to remove memorials of the Tiananmen Square Massacre that the CCP committed against pro-democracy Chinese students in 1989.

We only acknowledge Argentina and most of the nations that competed, not Qatar though. Migrant workers are the reason why that country was able to host it. Without foreigners, none of that would be possible.

@cleopatra667 I have checked all of my facts. Hassan al-Thawadi, the secretary-general of Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy literally said, "The estimate is around 400, between 400 and 500" on national TV when asked about how many died during the preparations of the World Cup which began in 2011. Don't lie and tell me "3 people died".
1
@cleopatra667 Just because most people in Qatar and its foreign supporters don't care about migrant workers doesn't mean everybody in that country is heartless and okay with the mistreatment of migrant workers.

So what about the Buddhist-influenced Asian countries? Shouldn't they be allowed to keep their heritage safe? Buddhism is an Asian religion after all. Japan, China, Sri Lanka and India all offered to purchase the Buddha statues from the Taliban, even offered ways to conceal them. In fact, Japan, China and Sri Lanka were the most strident advocates in protecting the statues, not the West.
1
Also, let me add that it was the Shia Muslim Hazaras of Afghanistan that were looking after the Buddha statues before the Taliban came to power.

@thejoyfuljello2404 That was such a peculiar thing for him to say. I'm not surprised with the lashings he received.
